Enforcing Racial Discrimination Essay
The arrangement of photos reported by the Farm Security Administration of the Office of War Information picture takers were taken somewhere in the range of 1937 and 1943, probably during the years the unit was in activity. These picture takers were entrusted to record different appearances of progress and congruity in the common American life, and this brought about a striking assortment of pictures that especially centered around the act of racial isolation. Inquisitively, while the picture takers were not formally recognized to have been coordinated to report explicit scenes, the prints delivered displayed a slant toward signs that demonstrate racial separation and isolation (LOC 2004). Among the thirty-one photographs remembered for the arrangement, all portray signs arranged in various areas, for example, transport and train stations, cafés, bistros, bars, cinemas, stores, and pool corridors. These signs likewise on the whole show the utilization of words, for example, ââ¬Å"coloredâ⬠and ââ¬Å"whiteââ¬â¢, which plainly approve the presence of isolation between Caucasian Americans and people of ethnic roots, for example, blacks and Indians. Consistent with the time during which they were captured, the earth and individuals by chance present in each image show up in credible habits of engineering and style. II. Racial Segregation in America The issue on race and separation in America can be broadly followed a very long time back, with the historical backdrop of Africans being brought into the nation as slaves. Despite the fact that this despicable condition had been revised by the increases of the Civil War, therefore giving opportunity to blacks. Notwithstanding, the event of the Great Depression during the 1920s brought back circumstances indistinguishable from those accomplished by African-Americans already, as the nation was plagued by the disorder created by the absence of occupations and wellsprings of pay. In 1932, most blacks wound up without work, and there was expanding pressure from whites to have blacks terminated from any activity that they accepted ought to be allocated to jobless whites. Various types of racial savagery again followed, especially in the South, during the 1930s (LOC 2002). The legitimate establishment of racial isolation was the Jim Crow laws, which were forced during the 1860s essentially in railroad vehicles, and kept on being upheld during the time until the 1960s (McElrath 2008). The impacts of isolation on run of the mill American life and society were evidently critical enough to make scenes sufficiently phenomenal to recount to their own accounts through photos, which were correctly what the Farm Security assortment accomplished. III. Past the Signs: Marking the Lines of Race The target of the Farm Security photos had been to portray standard American life, yet it is clear how the normality of the pictures at the time doesn't loan itself in a similar nature today. There is a state of conversation in the purposeful move to show gatherings of whites and ethnic individuals, yet the focusing on the signs that limit opportunity, that delete the capacity of decision. The investigation of signs, known as semiotics, gives the association between the crowd, translator, and the sign itself (Littlejohn 2008). The photographs, with their considered inclusion of the genuine sign, setting, and people, as of now structure the three-section process; the blacks are the crowd and the picture taker is the translator, inside the space secured by the sign. This shows how the picture takers intended to pass on a reality, a framework that pre-owned semiotics as an approach to force segregation. This they had finished with not a tad of investment on their end, very like the way Coles (1997) appropriated narrative work with the connecting of lives with the subject. A similar rationale is used by Gripsrud (in Gillespie and Toynbee 2006), when he grouped a photographerââ¬â¢s fill in as indexicalââ¬the recognizing of a particular part of a subjectââ¬and in this manner loans to much subjectivity. IV. Giving Indications of Racial Conflict to an Audience While the crowd of the signs were the blacksââ¬and whites, contingent upon the sign and situationââ¬the photosââ¬â¢ crowd are individuals who might profit by information on an alternate period, similar to the doubtful goal of the Farm Security picture takers in recording change and coherence in American life. For the most part, the photographs were for research and assessment, regardless of whether the crowd would discover them shocking or give them their endorsement. It might be conceivable that a portion of the individuals who involve the crowd are individuals who have survived a similar time, making them minor affirmations of what they definitely know; however the more applicable crowd would be the ignorant, who might discover new knowledge into American culture and its administration of racial issues in the late 1930s and mid 40s. V. Allocation of Technique and Style in Communicating Racism The high contrast photography is now critical all alone, alluding to the subjects too; seeing words on the signs caught in the photos bargains a twofold blowââ¬Ã¢â¬Ëblackââ¬â¢, or ââ¬Ëcoloredââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëwhiteââ¬â¢ signs in high contrast photographs. The picture takers basically caught the signs as they were, uncommonly for those in scenes without individuals processing around, yet there were additionally photographs that gave degrees of mankind and feeling. One of the most striking is a photograph of a bar demonstrating whites having lager, a sign on the divider above them that says ââ¬Å"Positively no brew offered to Indiansâ⬠. In spite of the fact that Indians are known for their affinity for liquor, it is upsetting one clear sign can show how this ethnic gathering is singled out and separated againstââ¬an blunder of speculation. The white individuals in the photograph seem genuine and very expert, which demonstrates how the sign ought not be confounded as a joke. Different photographs in the assortment, however giving indications and places instead of individuals as subjects, uncover the expanding society of urbanizationââ¬shown by the railways, transports, and stores where the signs are found. Urbanization, being shared view for the two blacks and whites, requires signs; these demonstrate white command over society and economy, and the expectation to keep ââ¬Ëcoloredââ¬â¢ individuals from this force. 25 Gateway Poets To Start Reading On World Poetry Day
25 Gateway Poets To Start Reading On World Poetry Day So, you typically read fiction, but youve wanted to branch out into poetry lately. Or, you loved poetry in college (especially Byron *swoon*), but youve struggled to find that lightning feeling again. Or, youve simply been hearing more about poetry because its having a comeback (its definitely having a comeback) and want to see what youre missing. Fantastic. For World Poetry Day, Ive collected 25 of my favorite gateway poets. Poets who dally on both sides of prose and poetry, or those who dig into the lyricality of language that appeals to our musical side. Finding these gateway poets is important. Because prose is great, but as the incomparable Roxane Gay recently wrote for the Poetry Foundation: What I do know is that when I read poetry, good poetry, I forget to breathe and my body is suffused with something unnamable?â"?a combination of awe and astonishment and the purest of pleasures. Reading poetry is such a thrill that I often feel like I am getting away with something. Ready to get away with something? 1. Kim Addonizio Your entry point: Tell Me Why: Addonizio writes self-identified poems of loneliness and late nights, liquor and loss. Her poems are rough, but also so strong. And because of lines like this, from What Do Women Want?: When I find it, Iâll pull that garment from its hanger like Iâm choosing a body to carry me into this world, through the birth-cries and the love-cries too, and Iâll wear it like bones, like skin, itâll be the goddamned dress they bury me in. 2. Maya Angelou Your entry point: And Still I Rise Why: Because its Maya Angelou? Because why havent you? No, but also because she was that good, and also because of poems like this: 3. Margaret Atwood Your entry point: Power Politics Why: Because you love Margaret Atwood. And she writes poetry! And Power Politics opens with this poem you already love: You fit into me like a hook into an eye a fish hook an open eye 4. Wendell Berry Your entry point: Jayber Crow Why: As both a poet and a novelist, Berry writes poems that linger in between the two. As a active environmentalist and farmer, he also creates poems that speak urgently to our land and the need to protect it. With lines like: You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out perhaps a little at a time. And how long is that going to take? I dont know. As long as you live, perhaps. That could be a long time. I will tell you a further mystery, he said. It may take longer. 5. Billy Collins Your entry point: The Trouble With Poetry, And Other Poems Why: Collins is likely the gateway poet, as he combines humor and self-deprecation into poems that poke fun at love and poetry conventions and those awful never-ending creative writing classes. the trouble with poetry is that it encourages the writing of more poetry, more guppies crowding the fish tank, more baby rabbits hopping out of their mothers into the dewy grass. And how will it ever end? 6. Lucille Clifton Your entry point: Good Woman Why: Because Cliftons poetry is inspiring and strong and so wonderful. Because of poems like homage to my hips. 7. Carol Ann Duffy Your entry point: The Worlds Wife Why: Duffy uses her poems to talk about feminism, family, our lives. And so much of it joyfully readable and tongue-in-cheek. âIm not the first or the last to stand on a hillock, watching the man she married prove to the world hes a total, utter, absolute, Grade A pillock. Mrs Icarusâ 8. Robert Frost Your entry point: Putting In The Seed Why: Yes, its Robert Frost. But, theres something deeply satisfying about his poetry even now. Plus, he makes a great gateway poet for those who last read poetry in school. (And getting to some sexier work thats outside of school-approved curriculum, like Putting in the Seed is a joy in itself.) 9. Seamus Heaney Your entry point: Beowulf Why: Heaney was a highly-regarded poet from Northern Ireland, who also worked heavily in translations. If youre a lover of mythology or oral poetry, Heaney is a great poet to bridge those two places, especially in his Beowulf translation. 10. Rupi Kaur Your entry point: @rupikaur_ Why: Kaurs Instagram shows how poetry can evolve to join the drawn world and become integrated seamlessly into our daily lives. Many of the poems she shares here also made it into her collection Milk and Honey. this poem is the aftermath of years of esl (english as a second language) classes ????. my tongue still mixes vs and ws. but were embracing it now. ?? A post shared by rupi kaur (@rupikaur_) on Aug 14, 2016 at 6:54pm PDT 11. Sarah Kay Your entry point: No Matter The Wreckage Why: Because Kay is one of the most breath-taking poets alive right now, seriously. Because of lines like: But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air. Because of poems like: 12. Donika Kelly Your entry point: Bestiary Why: Kelly combines a fierce mythology and fantasy in her collection of poems, which use the grotesque to uncover more about our everyday lives. Youll also discover throwbacks to earlier Romantic poets. Stand-out lines include: What clamor we made in the birthing. What hiss and rumble at the splitting, at the horns and beard, at the glottal bleat. What bridges our back. What strong neck, what bright eye. What menagerie are we. What weve made of ourselves. 13. Li-Young Lee Your entry point: Rose Why: Lee writes beautiful, evocative poetry thats easily picked up by non-poetry readers. Check out these lines from his gorgeous poem From Blossoms: From laden boughs, from hands, from sweet fellowship in the bins, comes nectar at the roadside, succulent peaches we devour, dusty skin and all, comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat. 14. Pablo Neruda Your entry point: The Essential Neruda Why: Forever and ever, Neruda is for the romantics. Sure, his poetry has been shared at a million weddings and some of it feels cliche at this point, but he did tap into something profound when it comes to love and connection. Take this from Love Sonnet XI: I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair. Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets. Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps. 15. Aimee Nezhukumatathil Your entry point: Lucky Fish Why: Nezhukumatathil write poetry that is instantly relatable and tongue-in-cheek, but is also lush, with leaping wordplay. She deals directly with hope, love, motherhood, and the possibilities of language in this collection. With lines like this from Are All the Break-Ups in Your Poems Real? If by real you mean as real as a shark tooth stuck in your heel, the wetness of a finished lollipop stick, the surprise of a thumbtack in your purseâ" then Yes, every last page is true, every nuance, bit, and bite. Wait. I have made them upâ"all of themâ" and when I say I am married, it means I married all of them, a whole neighborhood of past loves. 16. Mary Oliver Your entry point: Dream Work Why: I cant say enough about how much I love Oliver (and a lot of Rioters agree). Olivers poems read like prose, her prose reads like poetry. Shes also the perfect gateway poet for nature lovers. 17. Simon J. Ortiz Your entry point: Out There Somewhere Why: Influenced by the Beats and his own Native American heritage, Ortiz writes stunningly about our modern alienation from others, our ancestors, and the environment. His poetry is built on connection, and is a perfect fit for nature lovers, with lines like: We are wordless: I am in you. Without knowing why culture needs our knowledge, we are one self in the canyon. 18. Claudia Rankine Your entry point: Citizen Why: Citizen spans poetry and prose, taking on institutionalized racism in 21st century America through lyrical essays, images, and poetry. With lines like: Yes, and the body has memory. The physical carriage hauls more than its weight. The body is the threshold across which each objectionable call passes into consciousnessâ"all the unintimidated, unblinking, and unflappable resilience does not erase the moments lived through, even as we are eternally stupid or everlastingly optimistic, so ready to be inside, among, a part of the games. 19. Clint Smith Your entry point: Counting Descent Why: Smith tackles current issues, along with his love of reading and books, in his poems. And beyond poetry, Smith is also a two-time TED speaker with How to raise a black son in America and The danger of silence. 20. Warsan shire Your entry point: teaching my mother how to give birth Why: Shires poetry appeals directly to our senses, with imagery like âthe mouth bloody with grapesâ, the âgirl the height of a small wailâ And, her work was quoted in Lemonade. And, for poems like this: 21. Maggie Smith Your entry point: Disasterology Why: Youve probably already read her Good Bones poem that went viral last year, and with lines like Life is short, though I keep this from my children and I am trying to sell them the world, its no wonder. Now get to more of her smart, stunning poems in her longer collection. 22. Tracy K. Smith Your entry point: Life On Mars Why: If you love science fiction and space travel, youll love this meditation on the cosmos and the death of the poets father, who was an engineer on the Hubble Space Telescope. With lines like: After dark, stars glisten like ice, and the distance they span Hides something elemental. Not God, exactly. More like Some thin-hipped glittering Bowie-beingâ"a Starman Or cosmic ace hovering, swaying, aching to make us see. 23. Nayyirah Waheed Your entry point: @nayyirah.waheed Why: Like Kaur, Waheed brings poetry to a more modern, connected world with her Instagram account. Follow here there, and then check out her stunning collection salt. poem. from salt. by nayyirah waheed. #salt #nejma #literature #nayyirahwaheed A post shared by @nayyirah.waheed on Feb 10, 2017 at 7:17am PST 24. Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib Your entry point: The Crown Aint Worth Much Why: Willis-Abdurraqib writes (and performs) poetry about loss, love, and grief. In it, he combines his own personal history with popular culture. And, for poems like: 25. Jacqueline Woodson Your entry point: Brown Girl Dreaming Why: Woodson combines prose and poetry, especially in this book that shows what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s. Learning Integration in My Counseling Courses - 782 Words
I have been attending Emmaus Bible College for two years now and I have been taking many different courses. Before taking Counseling foundations I had never really thought about how I could integrate all my courses. What I mean is not separating each course into their own box not touching another but instead trying to incorporate all of my classes into each other, seeing how they affect or can affect each other. But after thinking about it for a while I came to the conclusion that if I believe that all true truth is Godââ¬â¢s truth then I should believe that everything I learn are related and are filtered through my own Biblical worldview and theology. So the rest of this paper will be me explaining how I have learned how I can integrate each of my classes that I have and am presently taking. We will see how my Bible/Theology courses can affect my youth ministry courses, and how each of those courses affect my psychology courses. Lastly, I will put all three together and see how they can be integrated into my own ministry and how they can affect my ministry. In my two years here at Emmaus Bible College I have taken several different theology courses. In these courses we have studied theologies such as Christology, soteriology, Hamartiology, Bibliology, etc. Each of these courses have deepened my understanding of the Bible and who God is and how He wants me to live to bring Him glory. Professional Development For Teachers With English...
Professional development for teachers that promotes English language acquisition and literacy proficiency for English language learners is the cornerstone of literacy reform in the United States. In this assignment, I define teacher knowledge. I then identify three areas of professional development that, by increasing teacher knowledge, would translate to increased learning gains for English language learners. Teacher Knowledge Carlisle, Kelcey, Rowan, and Phelps (2011) distinguished between teacher academic knowledge and teacher content knowledge. Academic knowledge, they wrote, is that which is gained through completion of academic courses, or earning diplomas and certificates. Academic knowledge is fundamental to teacher contentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, pre-service teacher training programs do not prepare teachers to meet the needs of these learners (Samson Collins). For those few states that do mandate teacher coursework in English language learner pedagogy, teacher preparation courses are underdeveloped, focusing on oral language development (Samson Collins). In his seminal work in second language acquisition, Cummins (2000) identified two domains of language proficiency, basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) and cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). CALP is the indicator of true biliteracy. Biliteracy models that support a childââ¬â¢s first language lead to faster academic proficiency in a second language (Escamilla et al. 2014). Teachers who do not understand second language acquisition will be unable to provide content knowledge to support biliteracy (National Research Council, 2010). Professional development that increases teacher academic and content knowledge of second language acquisition is the first component of literacy reform. Teacher Knowledge and Reading Once teachers acquire second language academic and content knowledge, they will need professional development in how to teach reading to English language learners, from phonemic awareness to comprehension (Hoover Gough, 2014). Teachers can then differentiate
Last Sacrifice Chapter Six Free Essays
REALLY, WHEN YOU THOUGHT ABOUT it, Sydney showing up wasnââ¬â¢t much weirder than half the other stuff that seemed to happen to me on a regular basis. Sydney was an Alchemist, one Iââ¬â¢d met in Russia when trying to find and kill Dimitri. She was my age and had hated being assigned over there, though Iââ¬â¢d certainly appreciated her aid. We will write a custom essay sample on Last Sacrifice Chapter Six or any similar topic only for you Order Now As Dimitri had noted earlier, the Alchemists would want to help the Moroi find and capture me. Yet, judging from the tension radiating off both her and Dimitri in the car, it became obvious that she was assisting in this escape. With great effort, I pushed my questions to the side for the time being. We were still fugitives, still undoubtedly being pursued. Sydneyââ¬â¢s car was a brand new Honda CR-V with Louisiana plates and a rental sticker. ââ¬Å"What the hell?ââ¬â¢ I asked. ââ¬Å"Is this daring escape being sponsored by Honda?ââ¬â¢ When this got no response, I went to the next obvious question. ââ¬Å"Are we going to New Orleans?ââ¬â¢ That was Sydneyââ¬â¢s new post. Sightseeing was the last thing on my mind at the moment, but if you had to run away, you might as well run somewhere good. ââ¬Å"No,ââ¬â¢ she said, backing out of the spot. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to West Virginia.ââ¬â¢ I looked sharply at Dimitri, who sat in the backseat, in the hopes that he would deny this. He didnââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"I assume by ââ¬Å"West Virginia,ââ¬â¢ you actually mean ââ¬Å"Hawaii,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Or some place equally exciting.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Honestly, I think youââ¬â¢re better off avoiding excitement right now,ââ¬â¢ Sydney pointed out. The carââ¬â¢s GPS device directed her to her next turn, leading us back toward I-81. She frowned slightly. ââ¬Å"And West Virginiaââ¬â¢s actually really pretty.ââ¬â¢ I remembered that she was from Utah and probably didnââ¬â¢t know any better. Having long since given up on any control in this escape plot, I moved on to the next obvious set of questions. ââ¬Å"Why are you helping us?ââ¬â¢ I had a feeling Sydney was grimacing in the dark. ââ¬Å"Why do you think?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Abe.ââ¬â¢ She sighed. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m really starting to wonder if New Orleans was worth it.ââ¬â¢ Iââ¬â¢d recently learned that Abeââ¬âwith that inexplicable, far-reaching influence of hisââ¬â had been responsible for getting her out of Russia. How heââ¬â¢d done it, I didnââ¬â¢t know. What I did know was that it had left Sydney in open-ended debt to him, one he kept using to get favors. Sometimes, I wondered if there was more to the deal than just a job transfer, like maybe heââ¬â¢d done something else that neither had told me about. Regardless, I started to chastise her again that she should have expected this for making a deal with the devil, but I soon reconsidered. With a bunch of guardians in pursuit, it probably wasnââ¬â¢t a smart idea to tease someone helping me. I asked a different question. ââ¬Å"Okay. So why are we going to West Virginia?ââ¬â¢ Sydney opened her mouth to respond, but Dimitri interrupted her. ââ¬Å"Not yet.ââ¬â¢ I turned around again and shot him a glare. ââ¬Å"I am so sick of this! Weââ¬â¢ve been on the run for six hours now, and I still donââ¬â¢t know all the details. I get that weââ¬â¢re staying away from the guardians, but are we seriously going to West Virginia? Are we going to make some cabin our base of operation? Like, one on the side of a mountain that doesnââ¬â¢t have plumbing?ââ¬â¢ Sydney gave me one of her trademark exasperated sighs. ââ¬Å"Do you actually know anything about West Virginia?ââ¬â¢ I didnââ¬â¢t like her and Dimitri teaming up to keep me in the dark. Of course, with Sydney, her reticence could be from any number of things. It could still be Abeââ¬â¢s orders. Or maybe she just didnââ¬â¢t want to talk to me. Since most Alchemists considered dhampirs and vampires the spawn of hell, they didnââ¬â¢t usually get too friendly with us. Spending time with me in Siberia had altered her views a little. I hoped. Sometimes I got the vibe she just wasnââ¬â¢t that social of a person to begin with. ââ¬Å"You know weââ¬â¢ve been set up, right?ââ¬â¢ I asked her. ââ¬Å"We didnââ¬â¢t really do anything. They say I killed the queen, butââ¬âââ¬Ë ââ¬Å"I know,ââ¬â¢ Sydney interrupted. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve heard all about it. All the Alchemists know about it. You two are at the top of our most wanted list.ââ¬â¢ She attempted a businesslike tone but couldnââ¬â¢t entirely hide her uneasiness. I had a feeling Dimitri made her more nervous than I did, which was understandable since he made some of our own people nervous too. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t do it,ââ¬â¢ I insisted. Somehow, it was important that she know that. Sydney didnââ¬â¢t acknowledge my comment. Instead, she said, ââ¬Å"You should eat. Your foodââ¬â¢s getting cold. Weââ¬â¢ve got a little over three hours to go and wonââ¬â¢t be stopping except for gas.ââ¬â¢ I recognized the finality in her voice, as well as the logic. She didnââ¬â¢t want to talk anymore. Inside the bag, I found two giant orders of fries, and three cheeseburgers. She apparently still knew me pretty well. It took all of my restraint to keep from stuffing fries into my mouth then and there. Instead, I offered a cheeseburger to Dimitri. ââ¬Å"You want one? Gotta keep up your strength.ââ¬â¢ He hesitated several seconds before taking it. He seemed to regard it with a kind of wonder, and it hit me that eating food was still a new thing for him after these last few months. Strigoi only subsisted on blood. I handed him a couple of fries too and then turned back around to devour the rest. I didnââ¬â¢t bother offering any to Sydney. She was notorious for her lack of appetite, and besides, I figured she would have eaten already if sheââ¬â¢d wanted to while waiting for us. ââ¬Å"I think this is for you,ââ¬â¢ Dimitri said, handing me a small backpack. I opened it and found a few changes of clothes, as well as some basic toiletries. I double-checked the outfits. ââ¬Å"Shorts, shirts, and a dress. I canââ¬â¢t fight in these. I need jeans.ââ¬â¢ The dress was cute, admittedly: a long gauzy sun-dress in a watercolor print of black, white, and gray. But very impractical. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s gratitude for you,ââ¬â¢ said Sydney. ââ¬Å"This happened kind of fast. There was only so much I could put together.ââ¬â¢ Glancing behind me, I saw Dimitri unpacking his own bag. It had basic clothing like mine and alsoââ¬â ââ¬Å"A duster?ââ¬â¢ I exclaimed, watching him pull out the long, leather coat. How it even fit in there defied physics. ââ¬Å"You managed to get him a duster, but you couldnââ¬â¢t find me a pair of jeans?ââ¬â¢ Sydney seemed unconcerned by my outrage. ââ¬Å"Abe said it was essential. Besides, if all goes like itââ¬â¢s supposed to, you wonââ¬â¢t be doing any fighting.ââ¬â¢ I didnââ¬â¢t like the sound of that. Safe and remote. Seeing as I had what were potentially the quietest car companions in the world, I knew better than to expect any real conversation for the next three hours. I supposed it was just as well because it let me check in on Lissa. I was still too on edge about my own escape to spend much time in her head, so it was just a quick assessment of life at Court. Just as Dimitri had predicted, the guardians had restored order pretty soon. The Court was under lockdown, and everyone with any connection to me was being questioned extensively. The thing was, they all had alibis. Everyone had seen my allies at the funeralââ¬âor, in Abeââ¬â¢s case, thought theyââ¬â¢d seen them. A couple girls swore theyââ¬â¢d been with Adrian, which I could only imagine was the result of more compulsion. I could feel Lissaââ¬â¢s satisfaction through the bond as the guardiansââ¬â¢ frustration grew and grew. Although she had no idea when I might be checking in on her, she sent me a message through the bond: Donââ¬â¢t worry, Rose. Iââ¬â¢ll take care of everything. Weââ¬â¢re going to clear your name. I slumped back in the car seat, unsure how to feel about this situation. All my life, Iââ¬â¢d taken care of her. Iââ¬â¢d protected her from danger and gone out of my way to keep her away from any threats. Now, the roles were reversed. Sheââ¬â¢d come through for me in saving Dimitri, and I was in herââ¬âand apparently everyone elseââ¬â¢sââ¬âhands as far as this escape was concerned. It went against every instinct I had and troubled me. I wasnââ¬â¢t used to being protected by others, let alone her. The interrogations were still going on, and Lissa hadnââ¬â¢t had hers yet, but something told me my friends were going to get off the hook for this. They wouldnââ¬â¢t be punished for my escape, and for the moment, I was really the only one in dangerââ¬âwhich was what I preferred. West Virginia might have been as beautiful as Sydney claimed, but I couldnââ¬â¢t really tell since it was the middle of the night when we arrived. Mostly I had the sense of driving through mountains, feeling the ups and downs as we went through switchbacks and tunnels. After almost exactly three hours, we rolled into a small hole of a town that had one traffic light and a restaurant simply marked DINER. There hadnââ¬â¢t been any traffic on the road for over an hour, though, which was really the most important thing. We hadnââ¬â¢t been followed. Sydney drove us to a building with a sign that read MOTEL. Apparently, this town liked to stick to the basics when it came to names. I wouldnââ¬â¢t be surprised if it was actually just called TOWN. As we walked across the motelââ¬â¢s parking lot, I was surprised to feel how sore my legs were. Every part of me ached, and sleep sounded fantastic. It had been more than half a day since this adventure began. Sydney checked us in under fake names, and the sleepy desk clerk didnââ¬â¢t ask any questions. We walked down a hall that wasnââ¬â¢t dirty exactly but also wasnââ¬â¢t anything a royal would have gone near. A cleaning cart leaned against one wall, as though someone had given up and abandoned it. Sydney suddenly came to a halt in front of a room and handed us a key. I realized she was heading off to a different room. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re not all staying together?ââ¬â¢ I asked. ââ¬Å"Hey, if you guys get caught, I donââ¬â¢t want to be anywhere near you,ââ¬â¢ she said, with a smile. I had a feeling she also didnââ¬â¢t want to sleep in the same room as ââ¬Å"evil creatures of the night.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll still be nearby, though. Weââ¬â¢ll talk in the morning.ââ¬â¢ This made me realize something else. I eyed Dimitri. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re sharing a room?ââ¬â¢ Sydney shrugged. ââ¬Å"All the better to defend yourselves.ââ¬â¢ She left us in that abrupt way of hers, and Dimitri and I glanced at each other briefly before heading into the room. Like the rest of the motel, it wasnââ¬â¢t fancy, but it would do. The carpet was worn but intact, and I appreciated the weak attempt at decorating with a very bad painting of some pears. A small window looked sad. There was one bed. Dimitri locked the bolt and chain on the door and then sat back in the roomââ¬â¢s lone chair. It was wooden with a straight back, but he seemed to regard it as the most comfortable thing in the world. He still wore that perpetually vigilant look of his, but I could see exhaustion around the edges. This had been a long night for him too. I sat down on the edge of the bed. ââ¬Å"What now?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Now we wait,ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬Å"For what?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"For Lissa and the others to clear your name and find out who killed the queen.ââ¬â¢ I expected more explanation, but all I got was silence. Disbelief began to build up in me. Iââ¬â¢d remained as patient as I could tonight, always assuming Dimitri was leading me toward some mysterious mission to help solve the murder. When he said we were going to wait, surely he didnââ¬â¢t mean we were just going to â⬠¦ well, wait? ââ¬Å"What are we going to do?ââ¬â¢ I demanded. ââ¬Å"How are we going to help them?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"We told you earlier: You can hardly go looking for clues at Court. You need to stay away. You need to stay safe.ââ¬â¢ My jaw dropped as I gestured around the drab room. ââ¬Å"What, and this is it? This is where youââ¬â¢re stashing me? I thought â⬠¦ I thought there was something here. Something to help.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"It is helping,ââ¬â¢ he said, in that damnably calm way of his. ââ¬Å"Sydney and Abe researched this place and decided it was out of the way enough to avoid detection.ââ¬â¢ I shot up from the bed. ââ¬Å"Okay, comrade. Thereââ¬â¢s one serious problem here with your logic. You guys keep acting like me staying out of the way is helping.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Whats a serious problem is us repeating this conversation over and over. The answers to who murdered Tatiana are at Court, and thatââ¬â¢s where your friends are. Theyââ¬â¢ll figure this out.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t just get in a high-speed chase and jump state lines to hole up in some crappy motel! How long are you planning on ââ¬Å"staying out of the wayââ¬â¢ here?ââ¬â¢ Dimitri crossed his arms over his chest. ââ¬Å"As long as it takes. We have the funds to stay here indefinitely.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"I probably have enough spare change in my pocket to stay here indefinitely! But itââ¬â¢s not happening. I have to do something. I wonââ¬â¢t just take the easy way out and sit around.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Surviving isnââ¬â¢t as easy as you think.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Oh God,ââ¬â¢ I groaned. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve been hanging out with Abe, havenââ¬â¢t you? You know, when you were a Strigoi, you told me to stay away from him. Maybe you should take your own advice.ââ¬â¢ I regretted the words as soon as they left my lips and saw in his eyes that Iââ¬â¢d inflicted serious damage. He might have been acting like the old Dimitri in this escape, but his time as a Strigoi still tormented him. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,ââ¬â¢ I said. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t meanââ¬âââ¬Ë ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re done discussing this,ââ¬â¢ he said harshly. ââ¬Å"Lissa says weââ¬â¢re staying here, so weââ¬â¢re staying here.ââ¬â¢ Anger shoved aside my guilt. ââ¬Å"Thats why youââ¬â¢re doing this? Because Lissa told you to?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Of course. I swore Iââ¬â¢d serve and help her.ââ¬â¢ That was when I snapped. It had been bad enough that when Lissa restored him to a dhampir, Dimitri had thought it was okay to stick around Lissa while spurning me. Despite the fact that Iââ¬â¢d been the one who went to Siberia and that I was the one who learned about how Victorââ¬â¢s brother Robert knew how to restore Strigoi â⬠¦ well, apparently those things didnââ¬â¢t matter. Only Lissa wielding the stake had seemed to matter, and Dimitri now held her up as some kind of angelic goddess, one heââ¬â¢d made an archaic, knight-like vow to serve. ââ¬Å"Forget it,ââ¬â¢ I said. ââ¬Å"I am not staying here.ââ¬â¢ I made it to the door in three steps and managed to undo the chain, but in seconds, Dimitri was out of his chair and had thrown me against the wall. Really, that was pretty slow reaction time. I would have expected him to stop me before Iââ¬â¢d taken two steps. ââ¬Å"You are staying here,ââ¬â¢ he said evenly, hands gripping my wrists. ââ¬Å"Whether you like it or not.ââ¬â¢ Now, I had a few options. I could stay, of course. I could hang out for daysââ¬âmonths, evenââ¬âin this motel until Lissa cleared my name. That was presuming Lissa could clear my name and that I didnââ¬â¢t get food poisoning from the DINER diner. This was the safest option. Also the most boring for me. Another option was to fight my way through Dimitri. That was neither safe nor easy. It would also be particularly challenging because Iââ¬â¢d have to try to fight in such a way that would allow me to escape but wouldnââ¬â¢t kill him or cause either of us serious injury. Or, I could just throw caution away and not hold back. Hell, the guy had battled Strigoi and half the Courtââ¬â¢s guardians. He could handle me giving everything I had. Weââ¬â¢d certainly shared some pretty rough encounters back at St. Vladimirââ¬â¢s. Would my best be enough for me to escape? Time to find out. I kneed him in the stomach, which he clearly hadnââ¬â¢t expected. His eyes widened in shockââ¬âand a little painââ¬âproviding me with an opening to break free of his grip. That opening was only long enough for me to yank out the doorââ¬â¢s bolt. Before I could reach for the knob, Dimitri had a hold of me again. He gripped me hard and threw me onto the bed stomach first, both pinning me with his weight and preventing my limbs from doing any more surprise kicking. This was always my biggest problem in fights: opponentsââ¬â usually menââ¬âwith more strength and weight. My speed was my greatest asset in those situations, but being held down made dodging and evasion a non-option. Still, every part of me struggled, making it difficult for him to keep me down. ââ¬Å"Stop this,ââ¬â¢ he said in my ear, his lips nearly touching it. ââ¬Å"Be reasonable for once. You canââ¬â¢t get past me.ââ¬â¢ His body was warm and strong against mine, and I promised my own body a stern scolding later. Quit it, I thought. Focus on getting out of here, not how he feels. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not the one being unreasonable,ââ¬â¢ I growled, trying to turn my face toward him. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the one caught up in some noble promise that makes no sense. And I know you donââ¬â¢t like to sit out of the action any more than I do. Help me. Help me find the murderer and do something useful.ââ¬â¢ I stopped struggling and pretended our argument had distracted me. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like sitting around, but I also donââ¬â¢t like rushing into an impossible situation!ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Impossible situations are our specialty,ââ¬â¢ I pointed out. Meanwhile, I tried to assess his hold on me. He hadnââ¬â¢t relaxed his grip, but I hoped maybe the conversation was distracting him. Normally, Dimitri was too good to lose his focus. But I knew he was tired. And maybe, just maybe, he might be a little careless since it was me and not a Strigoi. Nope. I lashed out abruptly, trying to break away and scramble out from under him. The best I managed to do was roll myself over before he had a hold of me again, now leaving me back-down on the bed. Being so close to him â⬠¦ his face, his lips â⬠¦ the warmth of his skin on mine. Well. It appeared that all Iââ¬â¢d accomplished was putting myself at a greater disadvantage. He certainly didnââ¬â¢t seem to be affected by our bodiesââ¬â¢ closeness. He wore that typical steel resolve of his, and even though it was stupid of me, even though I knew I shouldnââ¬â¢t care anymore that he was over me â⬠¦ well, I did care. ââ¬Å"One day,ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t even wait one day?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Maybe if weââ¬â¢d gone to a nicer hotel. With cable.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"This is no time for jokes, Rose.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Then let me do something. Anything.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"I. Canââ¬â¢t.ââ¬â¢ Saying the words obviously pained him, and I realized something. I was so mad at him, so furious that heââ¬â¢d try to make me sit around and play it safe. But he didnââ¬â¢t like any of this either. How could I have forgotten how alike we were? We both craved action. We both wanted to be useful, to help those we cared about. It was only his self- resolve to help Lissa that was keeping him here with this babysitting job. He claimed me rushing back to Court was reckless, but I had a feeling that if he hadnââ¬â¢t been the one in charge of meââ¬âor, well, thought he wasââ¬âhe would have run right back there too. I studied him, the determined dark eyes and expression softened by the brown hair that had escaped its ponytail holder. It hung around his face now, just barely touching mine. I could try to break free again but was losing hope of that working. He was too fierce and too set on keeping me safe. I suspected pointing out my suspicion that he wanted to go back to Court too wouldnââ¬â¢t do any good. True or not, he would be expecting me to argue with Rose-logic. He was Dimitri, after all. He would be expecting everything. Well, almost. An idea hit me so fast that I didnââ¬â¢t pause to analyze it. I just acted. My body might be constrained, but my head and neck had just enough freedom to shift upââ¬âand kiss him. My lips met his, and I learned a few things. One was that it was possible to catch him totally by surprise. His body froze and locked up, shocked at the sudden turn of events. I also realized that he was just as good a kisser as I recalled. The last time weââ¬â¢d kissed had been when he was Strigoi. There had been an eerie sexiness to that, but it didnââ¬â¢t compare to the heat and energy of being alive. His lips were just like I remembered from our time at St. Vladimirââ¬â¢s, both soft and hungry at the same time. Electricity spread through the rest of my body as he kissed me back. It was both comforting and exhilarating. And that was the third thing I discovered. He was kissing me back. Maybe, just maybe, Dimitri wasnââ¬â¢t as resolved as he claimed to be. Maybe under all that guilt and certainty that he couldnââ¬â¢t love again, he still wanted me. I would have liked to have found out. But I didnââ¬â¢t have the time. Instead, I punched him. Itââ¬â¢s true: Iââ¬â¢ve punched lots of guys who were kissing me but never one I actually wanted to keep kissing. Dimitri still had a solid hold on me, but the shock of the kiss had dropped his guard. My fist broke out and connected with the side of his face. Without missing a beat, I shoved him off me as hard as I could and leapt away from the bed and toward the door. I heard him scramble to his feet as I threw it open. I shot out of the room and slammed the door shut before I could see what he did next. Not that I needed to. He was coming after me. Without a momentââ¬â¢s hesitation, I shoved the abandoned cleaning cart in front of the roomââ¬â¢s door and sprinted off down the hall. A couple seconds later, the door opened, and I heard a cry of annoyanceââ¬âas well as a very, very bad word in Russianââ¬âas he ran into the cart. It would only take him a few moments to push it aside, but that was all I needed. I was down the flight of stairs in a flash and into the meager lobby where a bored desk clerk was reading a book. He nearly jumped out of his chair when I came tearing through. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s a guy chasing me!ââ¬â¢ I called as I headed out the door. The clerk didnââ¬â¢t really look like anyone who would try to stop Dimitri, and I had a feeling Dimitri wouldnââ¬â¢t stop anyway if the guy asked him to. In the most extreme case, the man would call the police. In this town, the POLICE probably consisted of one guy and a dog. Regardless, it was no longer my concern. I had escaped the motel and was now in the middle of a sleepy mountain town, its streets cast in shadows. Dimitri might be right behind me, but as I plunged into some woods nearby, I knew it was going to be easy for me to lose him in the darkness. How to cite Last Sacrifice Chapter Six, Essay examples
