25 Gateway Poets To Start Reading On World Poetry Day So, you typically read fiction, but youve wanted to branch out into poetry lately. Or, you loved poetry in college (especially Byron *swoon*), but youve struggled to find that lightning feeling again.  Or, youve simply been hearing more about poetry because its having a comeback (its definitely having a comeback) and want to see what youre missing. Fantastic. For World Poetry Day, Ive collected 25 of my favorite gateway poets. Poets who dally on both sides of prose and poetry, or those who dig into the lyricality  of language that appeals to our musical side. Finding these gateway poets is important. Because prose is great, but as the incomparable Roxane Gay  recently wrote for the Poetry Foundation: What I do know is that when I read poetry, good poetry, I forget to breathe and my body is suffused with something unnamable?â€"?a combination of awe and astonishment and the purest of pleasures. Reading poetry is such a thrill that I often feel like I am getting away with something. Ready to get away with something? 1. Kim Addonizio   Your entry point:  Tell Me Why: Addonizio writes self-identified poems of loneliness and late nights, liquor and loss. Her poems are rough, but also so strong. And because of lines like this, from What Do Women Want?: When I find it, I’ll pull that garment from its hanger like I’m choosing a body to carry me into this world, through the birth-cries and the love-cries too, and I’ll wear it like bones, like skin, it’ll be the goddamned dress they bury me in. 2. Maya Angelou Your entry point:  And Still I Rise Why: Because its Maya Angelou? Because why havent you? No, but also because she was  that good, and also because of  poems like this: 3. Margaret Atwood Your entry point:  Power Politics Why: Because you love Margaret Atwood. And she writes poetry! And  Power Politics opens with this poem  you already love: You fit into me like a hook into an eye a fish hook an open eye 4. Wendell Berry   Your entry point:  Jayber Crow Why: As both a poet and a novelist, Berry writes poems that linger in between the two. As a active environmentalist and farmer, he also creates poems that speak urgently to our land and the need to protect it. With lines like: You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out perhaps a little at a time. And how long is that going to take? I dont know. As long as you live, perhaps. That could be a long time. I will tell you a further mystery, he said. It may take longer. 5. Billy Collins Your entry point:  The Trouble With Poetry, And Other Poems Why:  Collins is likely  the  gateway poet, as he combines humor and self-deprecation into poems that poke fun at  love and poetry conventions and those awful never-ending creative writing classes. the trouble with poetry is that it encourages the writing of more poetry, more guppies crowding the fish tank, more baby rabbits hopping out of their mothers into the dewy grass. And how will it ever end? 6. Lucille Clifton   Your entry point:  Good Woman Why: Because  Cliftons poetry is inspiring and strong and so wonderful. Because of poems like homage to my hips. 7. Carol Ann Duffy Your entry point:  The Worlds Wife Why: Duffy uses her poems to talk about feminism, family, our lives. And so much  of it joyfully readable and tongue-in-cheek. “Im not the first or the last to stand on a hillock, watching the man she married prove to the world hes a total, utter, absolute, Grade A pillock. Mrs Icarus” 8. Robert Frost Your entry point: Putting In The Seed Why: Yes, its Robert Frost. But, theres something deeply satisfying about his poetry even now. Plus,  he makes a great gateway poet for those who last read poetry in school. (And getting to some sexier  work thats outside of school-approved curriculum, like Putting in the Seed  is a joy in itself.) 9. Seamus Heaney Your entry point:  Beowulf Why: Heaney was  a highly-regarded poet from Northern Ireland, who also worked heavily in translations. If youre a lover of mythology or oral poetry, Heaney is a great poet to bridge those two places, especially in his  Beowulf  translation. 10. Pablo Neruda   Your entry point:  The Essential Neruda Why: Forever and ever, Neruda is for the romantics. Sure, his poetry has been shared at a million weddings and some of it feels cliche at this point, but he did tap into something profound when it comes to love and connection. Take this from Love Sonnet XI: I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair. Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets. Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps. 15. Aimee  Nezhukumatathil Your entry point:  Lucky Fish Why:  Nezhukumatathil write poetry that is instantly relatable and tongue-in-cheek, but is also lush, with leaping wordplay. She deals directly with hope, love, motherhood, and the possibilities of language  in this collection. With lines like this from Are All the Break-Ups in Your Poems Real? If by real you mean as real as a shark tooth stuck in your heel, the wetness of a finished lollipop stick, the surprise of a thumbtack in your purseâ€" then Yes, every last page is true, every nuance, bit, and bite. Wait. I have made them upâ€"all of themâ€" and when I say I am married, it means I married all of them, a whole neighborhood of past loves. 16. Mary Oliver Your entry point: Dream Work Why: I cant say enough about how much I love Oliver (and a lot of Rioters agree). Olivers poems read like prose, her prose reads like poetry. Shes also the perfect gateway poet for nature lovers. 17. Simon J. Ortiz Your entry point:  Out There Somewhere Why: Influenced by the Beats and his own Native American heritage, Ortiz writes stunningly about our modern alienation from others, our ancestors, and the environment. His poetry is built on connection, and is  a perfect fit for nature lovers, with lines like: We are wordless: I am in you. Without knowing why culture needs our knowledge, we are one self in the canyon. 18. Claudia Rankine Your entry point:  Citizen Why:  Citizen  spans poetry and prose, taking on institutionalized racism in 21st century America through lyrical essays, images, and poetry. With lines like: Yes, and the body has memory. The physical carriage hauls more than its weight. Learning Integration in My Counseling Courses - 782 Words

I have been attending Emmaus Bible College for two years now and I have been taking many different courses. Before taking Counseling foundations I had never really thought about how I could integrate all my courses. What I mean is not separating each course into their own box not touching another but instead trying to incorporate all of my classes into each other, seeing how they affect or can affect each other. But after thinking about it for a while I came to the conclusion that if I believe that all true truth is God’s truth then I should believe that everything I learn are related and are filtered through my own Biblical worldview and theology. So the rest of this paper will be me explaining how I have learned how I can integrate each of my classes that I have and am presently taking. We will see how my Bible/Theology courses can affect my youth ministry courses, and how each of those courses affect my psychology courses. Lastly, I will put all three together and see how they can be integrated into my own ministry and how they can affect my ministry. In my two years here at Emmaus Bible College I have taken several different theology courses. Professional development for teachers that promotes English language acquisition and literacy proficiency for English language learners is the cornerstone of literacy reform in the United States. In this assignment, I define teacher knowledge. I then identify three areas of professional development that, by increasing teacher knowledge, would translate to increased learning gains for English language learners. Teacher Knowledge Carlisle, Kelcey, Rowan, and Phelps (2011) distinguished between teacher academic knowledge and teacher content knowledge. Teachers who do not understand second language acquisition will be unable to provide content knowledge to support biliteracy (National Research Council, 2010). Having long since given up on any control in this escape plot, I moved on to the next obvious set of questions. â€Å"Why are you helping us?’ I had a feeling Sydney was grimacing in the dark. â€Å"Why do you think?’ â€Å"Abe.’ She sighed. â€Å"I’m really starting to wonder if New Orleans was worth it.’ I’d recently learned that Abe–with that inexplicable, far-reaching influence of his– had been responsible for getting her out of Russia. How he’d done it, I didn’t know. What I did know was that it had left Sydney in open-ended debt to him, one he kept using to get favors. Sometimes, I wondered if there was more to the deal than just a job transfer, like maybe he’d done something else that neither had told me about. Regardless, I started to chastise her again that she should have expected this for making a deal with the devil, but I soon reconsidered. With a bunch of guardians in pursuit, it probably wasn’t a smart idea to tease someone helping me. I asked a different question. â€Å"Okay. So why are we going to West Virginia?’ Sydney opened her mouth to respond, but Dimitri interrupted her. â€Å"Not yet.’ I turned around again and shot him a glare. â€Å"I am so sick of this! We’ve been on the run for six hours now, and I still don’t know all the details. I get that we’re staying away from the guardians, but are we seriously going to West Virginia? Are we going to make some cabin our base of operation? Like, one on the side of a mountain that doesn’t have plumbing?’ Sydney gave me one of her trademark exasperated sighs. â€Å"Do you actually know anything about West Virginia?’ I didn’t like her and Dimitri teaming up to keep me in the dark. Of course, with Sydney, her reticence could be from any number of things. It could still be Abe’s orders. Or maybe she just didn’t want to talk to me. Since most Alchemists considered dhampirs and vampires the spawn of hell, they didn’t usually get too friendly with us. Spending time with me in Siberia had altered her views a little. I hoped. Sometimes I got the vibe she just wasn’t that social of a person to begin with. â€Å"You know we’ve been set up, right?’ I asked her. â€Å"We didn’t really do anything. They say I killed the queen, but–‘ â€Å"I know,’ Sydney interrupted. â€Å"I’ve heard all about it. All the Alchemists know about it. You two are at the top of our most wanted list.’ She attempted a businesslike tone but couldn’t entirely hide her uneasiness. I had a feeling Dimitri made her more nervous than I did, which was understandable since he made some of our own people nervous too. â€Å"I didn’t do it,’ I insisted. Somehow, it was important that she know that. Sydney didn’t acknowledge my comment. Instead, she said, â€Å"You should eat. Your food’s getting cold. We’ve got a little over three hours to go and won’t be stopping except for gas.’ I recognized the finality in her voice, as well as the logic. She didn’t want to talk anymore. Inside the bag, I found two giant orders of fries, and three cheeseburgers. She apparently still knew me pretty well. It took all of my restraint to keep from stuffing fries into my mouth then and there. Instead, I offered a cheeseburger to Dimitri. â€Å"You want one? Gotta keep up your strength.’ He hesitated several seconds before taking it. He seemed to regard it with a kind of wonder, and it hit me that eating food was still a new thing for him after these last few months. Strigoi only subsisted on blood. I handed him a couple of fries too and then turned back around to devour the rest. I didn’t bother offering any to Sydney. She was notorious for her lack of appetite, and besides, I figured she would have eaten already if she’d wanted to while waiting for us. â€Å"I think this is for you,’ Dimitri said, handing me a small backpack. I opened it and found a few changes of clothes, as well as some basic toiletries. I double-checked the outfits. â€Å"Shorts, shirts, and a dress. I can’t fight in these. I need jeans.’ The dress was cute, admittedly: a long gauzy sun-dress in a watercolor print of black, white, and gray. But very impractical. â€Å"That’s gratitude for you,’ said Sydney. â€Å"This happened kind of fast. There was only so much I could put together.’ Glancing behind me, I saw Dimitri unpacking his own bag. It had basic clothing like mine and also– â€Å"A duster?’ I exclaimed, watching him pull out the long, leather coat. How it even fit in there defied physics. â€Å"You managed to get him a duster, but you couldn’t find me a pair of jeans?’ Sydney seemed unconcerned by my outrage. â€Å"Abe said it was essential. Besides, if all goes like it’s supposed to, you won’t be doing any fighting.’ I didn’t like the sound of that. Safe and remote. Seeing as I had what were potentially the quietest car companions in the world, I knew better than to expect any real conversation for the next three hours. I supposed it was just as well because it let me check in on Lissa. I was still too on edge about my own escape to spend much time in her head, so it was just a quick assessment of life at Court. Just as Dimitri had predicted, the guardians had restored order pretty soon. The Court was under lockdown, and everyone with any connection to me was being questioned extensively. The thing was, they all had alibis. Everyone had seen my allies at the funeral–or, in Abe’s case, thought they’d seen them. A couple girls swore they’d been with Adrian, which I could only imagine was the result of more compulsion. I could feel Lissa’s satisfaction through the bond as the guardians’ frustration grew and grew. Although she had no idea when I might be checking in on her, she sent me a message through the bond: Don’t worry, Rose. I’ll take care of everything. We’re going to clear your name. I slumped back in the car seat, unsure how to feel about this situation. All my life, I’d taken care of her. I’d protected her from danger and gone out of my way to keep her away from any threats. Now, the roles were reversed. She’d come through for me in saving Dimitri, and I was in her–and apparently everyone else’s–hands as far as this escape was concerned. It went against every instinct I had and troubled me. I wasn’t used to being protected by others, let alone her. The interrogations were still going on, and Lissa hadn’t had hers yet, but something told me my friends were going to get off the hook for this. They wouldn’t be punished for my escape, and for the moment, I was really the only one in danger–which was what I preferred. West Virginia might have been as beautiful as Sydney claimed, but I couldn’t really tell since it was the middle of the night when we arrived. Mostly I had the sense of driving through mountains, feeling the ups and downs as we went through switchbacks and tunnels. After almost exactly three hours, we rolled into a small hole of a town that had one traffic light and a restaurant simply marked DINER. There hadn’t been any traffic on the road for over an hour, though, which was really the most important thing. We hadn’t been followed. Sydney drove us to a building with a sign that read MOTEL. Apparently, this town liked to stick to the basics when it came to names. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was actually just called TOWN. As we walked across the motel’s parking lot, I was surprised to feel how sore my legs were. Every part of me ached, and sleep sounded fantastic. It had been more than half a day since this adventure began. Sydney checked us in under fake names, and the sleepy desk clerk didn’t ask any questions. We walked down a hall that wasn’t dirty exactly but also wasn’t anything a royal would have gone near. A cleaning cart leaned against one wall, as though someone had given up and abandoned it. Sydney suddenly came to a halt in front of a room and handed us a key. I realized she was heading off to a different room. â€Å"We’re not all staying together?’ I asked. â€Å"Hey, if you guys get caught, I don’t want to be anywhere near you,’ she said, with a smile. I had a feeling she also didn’t want to sleep in the same room as â€Å"evil creatures of the night.’ â€Å"I’ll still be nearby, though. We’ll talk in the morning.’ This made me realize something else. I eyed Dimitri. â€Å"We’re sharing a room?’ Sydney shrugged. â€Å"All the better to defend yourselves.’ She left us in that abrupt way of hers, and Dimitri and I glanced at each other briefly before heading into the room. Like the rest of the motel, it wasn’t fancy, but it would do. The carpet was worn but intact, and I appreciated the weak attempt at decorating with a very bad painting of some pears. A small window looked sad. There was one bed. Dimitri locked the bolt and chain on the door and then sat back in the room’s lone chair. It was wooden with a straight back, but he seemed to regard it as the most comfortable thing in the world. He still wore that perpetually vigilant look of his, but I could see exhaustion around the edges. This had been a long night for him too. I sat down on the edge of the bed. â€Å"What now?’ â€Å"Now we wait,’ he said. â€Å"For what?’ â€Å"For Lissa and the others to clear your name and find out who killed the queen.’ I expected more explanation, but all I got was silence. Disbelief began to build up in me. I’d remained as patient as I could tonight, always assuming Dimitri was leading me toward some mysterious mission to help solve the murder. When he said we were going to wait, surely he didn’t mean we were just going to †¦ well, wait? â€Å"What are we going to do?’ I demanded. â€Å"How are we going to help them?’ â€Å"We told you earlier: You can hardly go looking for clues at Court. You need to stay away. You need to stay safe.’ My jaw dropped as I gestured around the drab room. â€Å"What, and this is it? This is where you’re stashing me? I thought †¦ I thought there was something here. Something to help.’ â€Å"It is helping,’ he said, in that damnably calm way of his. â€Å"Sydney and Abe researched this place and decided it was out of the way enough to avoid detection.’ I shot up from the bed. â€Å"Okay, comrade. There’s one serious problem here with your logic. You guys keep acting like me staying out of the way is helping.’ â€Å"Whats a serious problem is us repeating this conversation over and over. The answers to who murdered Tatiana are at Court, and that’s where your friends are. They’ll figure this out.’ â€Å"I didn’t just get in a high-speed chase and jump state lines to hole up in some crappy motel! How long are you planning on â€Å"staying out of the way’ here?’ Dimitri crossed his arms over his chest. â€Å"As long as it takes. We have the funds to stay here indefinitely.’ â€Å"I probably have enough spare change in my pocket to stay here indefinitely! But it’s not happening. I have to do something. It had been bad enough that when Lissa restored him to a dhampir, Dimitri had thought it was okay to stick around Lissa while spurning me. Despite the fact that I’d been the one who went to Siberia and that I was the one who learned about how Victor’s brother Robert knew how to restore Strigoi †¦ well, apparently those things didn’t matter. Only Lissa wielding the stake had seemed to matter, and Dimitri now held her up as some kind of angelic goddess, one he’d made an archaic, knight-like vow to serve. â€Å"Forget it,’ I said. â€Å"I am not staying here.’ I made it to the door in three steps and managed to undo the chain, but in seconds, Dimitri was out of his chair and had thrown me against the wall. Really, that was pretty slow reaction time. I would have expected him to stop me before I’d taken two steps. â€Å"You are staying here,’ he said evenly, hands gripping my wrists. â€Å"Whether you like it or not.’ Now, I had a few options. I could stay, of course. I could hang out for days–months, even–in this motel until Lissa cleared my name. That was presuming Lissa could clear my name and that I didn’t get food poisoning from the DINER diner. This was the safest option. Also the most boring for me. Another option was to fight my way through Dimitri. That was neither safe nor easy. It would also be particularly challenging because I’d have to try to fight in such a way that would allow me to escape but wouldn’t kill him or cause either of us serious injury. Or, I could just throw caution away and not hold back. Hell, the guy had battled Strigoi and half the Court’s guardians. He could handle me giving everything I had. We’d certainly shared some pretty rough encounters back at St. Vladimir’s. Would my best be enough for me to escape? Time to find out. I kneed him in the stomach, which he clearly hadn’t expected. His eyes widened in shock–and a little pain–providing me with an opening to break free of his grip. That opening was only long enough for me to yank out the door’s bolt. Before I could reach for the knob, Dimitri had a hold of me again. He gripped me hard and threw me onto the bed stomach first, both pinning me with his weight and preventing my limbs from doing any more surprise kicking. This was always my biggest problem in fights: opponents– usually men–with more strength and weight. My speed was my greatest asset in those situations, but being held down made dodging and evasion a non-option. Still, every part of me struggled, making it difficult for him to keep me down. â€Å"Stop this,’ he said in my ear, his lips nearly touching it. â€Å"Be reasonable for once. You can’t get past me.’ His body was warm and strong against mine, and I promised my own body a stern scolding later. Quit it, I thought. Well. It appeared that all I’d accomplished was putting myself at a greater disadvantage. He certainly didn’t seem to be affected by our bodies’ closeness. He wore that typical steel resolve of his, and even though it was stupid of me, even though I knew I shouldn’t care anymore that he was over me †¦ well, I did care. â€Å"One day,’ he said. â€Å"You can’t even wait one day?’ â€Å"Maybe if we’d gone to a nicer hotel. With cable.’ â€Å"This is no time for jokes, Rose.’ â€Å"Then let me do something. Anything.’ â€Å"I. Can’t.’ Saying the words obviously pained him, and I realized something. I was so mad at him, so furious that he’d try to make me sit around and play it safe. But he didn’t like any of this either. How could I have forgotten how alike we were? We both craved action. I could try to break free again but was losing hope of that working. He was too fierce and too set on keeping me safe. I suspected pointing out my suspicion that he wanted to go back to Court too wouldn’t do any good. True or not, he would be expecting me to argue with Rose-logic. He was Dimitri, after all. He would be expecting everything. Well, almost. An idea hit me so fast that I didn’t pause to analyze it. I just acted. My body might be constrained, but my head and neck had just enough freedom to shift up–and kiss him. My lips met his, and I learned a few things. One was that it was possible to catch him totally by surprise. His body froze and locked up, shocked at the sudden turn of events. I also realized that he was just as good a kisser as I recalled. The last time we’d kissed had been when he was Strigoi. There had been an eerie sexiness to that, but it didn’t compare to the heat and energy of being alive. His lips were just like I remembered from our time at St. Vladimir’s, both soft and hungry at the same time. Electricity spread through the rest of my body as he kissed me back. It was both comforting and exhilarating. And that was the third thing I discovered. He was kissing me back. Maybe, just maybe, Dimitri wasn’t as resolved as he claimed to be. Maybe under all that guilt and certainty that he couldn’t love again, he still wanted me. I would have liked to have found out. But I didn’t have the time. Instead, I punched him. It’s true: I’ve punched lots of guys who were kissing me but never one I actually wanted to keep kissing. Dimitri still had a solid hold on me, but the shock of the kiss had dropped his guard. My fist broke out and connected with the side of his face. Without missing a beat, I shoved him off me as hard as I could and leapt away from the bed and toward the door. I heard him scramble to his feet as I threw it open. I shot out of the room and slammed the door shut before I could see what he did next. Not that I needed to. He was coming after me. Without a moment’s hesitation, I shoved the abandoned cleaning cart in front of the room’s door and sprinted off down the hall. A couple seconds later, the door opened, and I heard a cry of annoyance–as well as a very, very bad word in Russian–as he ran into the cart. It would only take him a few moments to push it aside, but that was all I needed. I was down the flight of stairs in a flash and into the meager lobby where a bored desk clerk was reading a book. He nearly jumped out of his chair when I came tearing through. â€Å"There’s a guy chasing me!’ I called as I headed out the door. The clerk didn’t really look like anyone who would try to stop Dimitri, and I had a feeling Dimitri wouldn’t stop anyway if the guy asked him to. The 15th Century Chinese Explorer Cheng Ho

The 15th Century Chinese Explorer Cheng Ho Decades before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of a water route to Asia, the Chinese were exploring the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific with seven voyages of the Treasure Fleet that solidified Chinese control over much of Asia in the 15th century. The Treasure Fleets were commanded by a powerful eunuch admiral named Cheng Ho. Cheng Ho was born around 1371 in Chinas southwestern Yunan Province (just north of Laos) with the name Ma Ho. Ma Hos father was a Muslim hajji (who had made a pilgrimage to Mecca) and the family name of Ma was used by Muslims in representations of the word Mohammed. When Ma Ho was ten years old (around 1381), he was captured along with other children when the Chinese army invaded Yunan to take control over the region. At the age of 13 he was castrated, as were other young prisoners, and he was placed as a servant in the household of the Chinese Emperors fourth son (out of twenty-six total sons), Prince Zhu Di. Ma Ho proved himself to be an exceptional servant to Prince Zhu Di. He became skilled in the arts of war and diplomacy and served as an officer of the prince. Zhu Di renamed Ma Ho as Cheng Ho because the eunuchs horse was killed in battle outside of a place called Zhenglunba. (Cheng Ho is also Zheng He in the newer Pinyin transliteration of Chinese but hes still most commonly called Cheng Ho). Cheng Ho was also known as San Bao which means three jewels. Cheng Ho, who was said to have been seven feet tall, was given greater power when Zhu Di became emperor in 1402. One year later, Zhu Di appointed Cheng Ho admiral and ordered him to oversee the construction of a Treasure Fleet to explore the seas surrounding China. Admiral Cheng Ho was the first eunuch appointed to such a high military position in China. First Voyage (1405-1407) The first Treasure Fleet consisted of 62 ships; four were huge wood boats, some of the largest ever built in history. They were approximately 400 feet (122 meters) long and 160 feet (50 meters) wide. The four were the flagships of the fleet of 62 ships assembled at Nanjing along the Yangtze (Chang) River. Included in the fleet were 339-foot (103-meter) long horse ships that carried nothing but horses, water ships that carried fresh water for the crew, troop transports, supply ships, and warships for offensive and defensive needs. The ships were filled with thousands of tons of Chinese goods to trade with others during the voyage. In the fall of 1405, the fleet was ready to embark with 27,800 men. The fleet utilized the compass, invented in China in the 11th century, for navigation. Graduated sticks of incense were burned to measure time. One day was equal to 10 watches of 2.4 hours each. Chinese navigators determine latitude through monitoring the North Star (Polaris) in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Cross in the Southern Hemisphere. The ships of the Treasure Fleet communicated with one another through the use of flags, lanterns, bells, carrier pigeons, gongs, and banners. The destination of the first voyage of the Treasure Fleet was Calicut, known as a major trading center on the southwestern coast of India. India was initially discovered by Chinese overland explorer Hsuan-Tsang in the seventh century. The fleet stopped in Vietnam, Java, and Malacca, and then headed west across the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka and Calicut and Cochin (cities on the southwest coast of India). They remained in India to barter and trade from late 1406 to the spring of 1407 when they utilized the monsoon shift to sail toward home. On the return voyage, the Treasure Fleet was forced to battle pirates near Sumatra for several months. Eventually, Cheng Hos men managed to capture the pirate leader and take him to the Chinese capital Nanjing, arriving in 1407. Second Voyage (1407-1409) A second voyage of the Treasure Fleet departed on a return trip to India in 1407 but Cheng Ho did not command this voyage. He remained in China to oversee the repair of a temple at the birthplace of a favorite goddess. The Chinese envoys on board helped to ensure the power of a king of Calicut. The fleet returned in 1409. Third Voyage (1409-1411) The fleets third voyage (Cheng Hos second) from 1409 to 1411 consisted of 48 ships and 30,000 men. It followed closely the route of the first voyage but the Treasure Fleet established entrepots (warehouses) and stockades along their route to facilitate trade and storage of goods. On the second voyage, the King of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was aggressive; Cheng Ho defeated the kings forces and captured the king to take him to Nanjing. Fourth Voyage (1413-1415) In late 1412, Cheng Ho was ordered by Zhu Di to make  a fourth  expedition. It wasnt until late 1413 or early 1414 that Cheng Ho embarked on his expedition with 63 ships and 28,560 men. The goal of this trip was to reach the Persian Gulf at Hormuz, known to be a city of amazing wealth and goods, including pearls and precious stones much coveted by the Chinese emperor. In the summer of 1415, the Treasure Fleet returned with a bounty of trade goods from the Persian Gulf. Detachments of this expedition sailed south along the eastern coast of Africa almost as far south as Mozambique. During each of Cheng Hos voyages, he brought back diplomats from other countries or encouraged ambassadors to go to the capital Nanjing on their own. Fifth Voyage (1417-1419) The fifth voyage was ordered in 1416 to return the ambassadors who had arrived from other countries. The Treasure Fleet departed in 1417 and visited the Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa, returning envoys along the way. They returned in 1419. Sixth Voyage (1421-22) A sixth voyage was launched in the spring of 1421 and visited Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, and Africa. By this time, Africa was considered Chinas El Dorado, a source of riches. Cheng Ho returned in late 1421 but the remainder of the fleet didnt arrive in China until 1422. Emperor Zhu Di died in 1424 and his son Zhu Gaozhi became emperor. He canceled the voyages of the Treasure Fleets and ordered shipbuilders and sailors to stop their work and return home. Cheng Ho was appointed military commander of Nanjing. Seventh Voyage (1431-1433) The leadership of Zhu Gaozhi did not last long. He died in 1426 at the age of 26. His son and Zhu Dis grandson Zhu Zhanji took Zhu Gaozhis place. Zhu Zhanji was much more like his grandfather than his father was and in 1430 he resumed the Treasure Fleet voyages by ordering Cheng Ho to resume his duties as admiral and make  a seventh  voyage in an attempt to restore peaceful relations with the kingdoms of Malacca and Siam. It took a year to gear up for the voyage which departed as a large expedition with 100 ships and 27,500 men. On the return trip in  1433,  Cheng Ho is believed to have died; others state that he died in 1435 after the return to China. Nonetheless, the era of exploration for China was soon over as the following  emperors  prohibited trade and even the construction of ocean-going vessels.
